SOME OF OUR MOST ASKED QUESTIONS:
Do I even need to get insurance?
The Affordable Care Act requires all individuals to have health insurance. If an individual does not have coverage they will face tax penalties at the end of the year. This could be a flat amount of $95.00 per person or 1% of their income for 2014, whichever is greater. These amounts will increase each year. For more details, please contact your tax advisor.

Can I change my plan?
Yes, you may change your plan each year during the open enrollment period.
I already have individual insurance. Can I appoint Shasta Health Insurance Services, Inc. in Redding as my agent?
We would be happy to discuss your current coverage with you and help you decide if you’re adequately covered or need to make some changes. In most cases, you can appoint us as your agent with just a simple form.
If you have questions or would like to make an appointment, call the experienced Redding Health Insurance agents of Shasta Health at 530-722-0770, fill out our contact form, or email us at email@example.com.
Are there different types of individual insurance?
There are many different options for individual insurance. There are PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations), EPOs (Exclusive Provider Organizations), HSAs (Health Savings Accounts), and more. Depending on your needs and budget, we can help you determine which type of plan works best for you and your family.
Is health insurance expensive?
That’s a difficult question because the rates vary based on age, geographic area, income, and other factors. The most affordable plan is called the “Bronze” plan. Whether this is purchased as a Covered California plan or directly through a private insurance carrier, this plan is going to be the least expensive which is reflected in the benefits. The more benefits offered, the more expensive the plan will be.
What is a health savings account (HSA)?
If you have a high deductible plan that is compliant with IRS regulations you can contribute to a health savings account (HSA). Contributions to an HSA can usually be made with “pre-tax” dollars. Contribution amounts are limited. Please consult your tax advisor for more details. You have the ability to use the funds from this account to pay for qualified expenses so you are essentially using pre-tax dollars to pay for your qualified health costs.
Am I guaranteed health insurance when I apply?
As long as you are applying during the open enrollment or within 60 days of a “qualifying life event” your eligibility is guaranteed. If neither of these applies to you there are still plans available but they are subject to medical underwriting.
What is a “premium subsidy?”
A premium subsidy or “advance tax credit” is available through the Covered California program. It is an amount paid by the government directly to the insurance company to reduce the amount you have to pay for your insurance. The amount of premium subsidy available depends on many things such as income, age, and number of people in the household. If you qualify for a subsidy based on your income, your premiums can be dramatically lower.
